Sujet | CLARION Pilot Demonstrators 2 - Monitoring and management system for the corrosion of port infrastructure.
During CLARION the following five actions will be carried out: (1) Historical corrosion measurements (thickness values for sheet piling) are available at POAB and will be modelled according to their position and depth, following Melchers' model, as performed at HZS before. (2) Present-day comparison points will be created in both Antwerp and Zeebrugge to compare corrosion rates with historical values. To this end, several racks of corrosion coupons will be suspended at different locations in the port and at three different depths per location. The coupons consist of one of our three standard materials (Grade A/S235 carbon steel, S355 carbon steel and 316L stainless steel). These coupons are collected at fixed time points and the corrosion rate is determined by weight loss and, if pitting corrosion is detected, by determining the pitting index. These data will be modelled as mentioned above. (3) Fixed measuring points will be set up to monitor environmental parameters on one location in both Antwerp and Zeebrugge. These measuring points consists of a movable 4x4 m platform (figure, left), equipped with an approved IP68 electrical protection box for the electronics (figure, middle), coupled to a Scuba 90 environmental probe (Eijkelkamp Soil & Water, the Netherlands; figure, right) and an LPR corrosion sensor (CCube, the Netherlands). Such a platform will measure a large array of environmental parameters next to a large array of measurement coupons. Using the developed algorithm (see above), we can convert these environmental parameters into a corrosion rate. We will also attempt to calculate corrosion rates from existing datasets. The capacity of the platforms will be expanded with a sensor system to assess corrosion of steel bars inside reinforced concrete provided by TEC and ACCIONA.
