The development of a Wellbeing app for cadets at the Maritime Academy in Flushing: A needs analysis and technical implementation
This master’s thesis focuses on the development of a well-being app for cadets at HZ University of Applied Sciences in Flushing. Students are exposed to stress, sleep deprivation and social isolation during their six-month internship at sea. The goal of this research is to analyze their needs and develop an app that supports their well-being.
A mixed-methods approach was used: six qualitative intervieuws and a questionnaire among 14 students identified specific needs about functionalities, ease of use and timing.
Students indicated a need for a simple and user-friendly app to monitor and improve stress, sleep quality and social connectedness.
For the technical implementation, m-Path was chosen, a flexible and reliable platform that meets the preferences of the target audience. The results show that a well-being app can help proactively manage students’ well-being during their internship. It is recommended to start a pilot project, further development and implementation of the app in cooperation with the HZ University of Applied Sciences.
