In this thesis, the exhaust gases of a modified diesel engine and the influence of an alternative catalyst based on a cobalt alloy on emissions are investigated. This paper presents
a first proof of concept for comparing different catalysts, enabling the test setup to be
used in the future for evaluating and analyzing various alternative catalytic materials.
The exhaust gases are analyzed for the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon
dioxide (CO2 ), nitrogen oxides (N O2 and N O), and unburned hydrocarbons (HC). These
measurements provide insight into the catalytic behavior and how emissions vary under
different engine load conditions.
The results demonstrate that the catalyst has a clear impact on the composition of the
exhaust gases. An efficient catalyst can achieve a significant reduction in harmful emissions such as N O2 and N O without requiring major modifications to the engine. The
findings of this study may contribute to improved emission control strategies for marine
diesel engines, helping to reduce their environmental footprint and ensure compliance with
current and future emission regulations set by the IMO and other regulatory bodies.
