Designing a generator for converting wave energy to electrical energy
This thesis is about designing a generator for converting wave energy to electrical power in the
context of a wave energy converter. The various chapters discuss the steps taken. The design of
the generator began with a literature review to determine that a 3-phase double rotor axial flux
generator would be used. Later, for practical reasons, it was decided to switch to a single-phase
model with 1 large coil. Initial results showed that the generator did not produce voltage. The
model was modified to reduce the air gap and the number of magnets was also adjusted to
finally arrive at a working model. Thus, a double rotor was changed to a single model and the
number of magnets was reduced from 48 to 36. Because of the necessary modifications, the
final version of the generator could not achieve the desired power output. The study concludes
with a critical approach to the designed generator and the concerns that need to be taken into
account towards the future. For instance, it is important to have a good ratio of coils to magnets
and to keep the air gap as small and uniform as possible
