Corrosion causes problems worldwide in various industries, including shipping.Now it appears that ionic liquids have interesting properties that can have an inhibiting effect on corrosion.
The inhibiting effect of a number of ionic liquids has already proved effective in research on carbon steel, aluminum, copper, zinc and magnesium.
This thesis examines whether the same applies to ship steel in a marine environment. The research question in this thesis is: 'To what extent is treatment with ionic liquids effective for corrosion control, when ship steel is placed in seawater for a longer period?' To answer this question, metal plates were treated with ionic liquids and placed in the sea. After several time spans they were taken out of the water, to determine the weight loss.
The results of the experiment showed that ionic liquids can not be used under the conditions used to reduce corrosion.
